Westminster RC Cathedral :: Visitors' Map of London :: A-Z Maps
Westminster RC CathedralEngland's premier Roman Catholic Cathedral, seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster and scene of the first mass ever celebrated by a Pope on English soil - Pope Paul II, May 1982.
This great Early Christian Byzantine style edifice was built 1895-1903 to designs by J. F. Bentley, its exterior of alternate brick and stone bands dominated by the 284ft campanile is beautifully off set by modern architecture and piazza. The cavernous interior, 342ft long is divided into three domed bays with low relief carvings - Stations of the Cross - by Eric Gill. The eleven side chapels illustrate how the whole interior will look when completed with their lavish surface decoration in marble and mosaic.
Music is an important aspect of the Cathedral which has what is widely considered to be one of the finest choirs in the world.
The Campanile provides panoramic views over Westminster. Admission Charge for lift to viewing gallery.
