St Bartholomew the Great Church :: Visitors' Map of London :: A-Z Maps
St Bartholomew the Great ChurchPart of the Augustinian Priory founded in 1123 by Rahere, jester to Henry I, and later the first Prior. The Priory was dissolved in 1539 and the nave of the Church demolished to leave the chancel to act as a Parish Church of cathedral like proportions. The choir and crossing are original Norman work - the finest Romanesque architecture in the City; the 14th century Lady Chapel, Crypt and 17th century brick Tower all heavily restored 1897 by Aston Webb. Features include the only pre-reformation font in the City and monument to Rahere.
