Speke's Monument

An elegant stone obelisk in memory of the explorer John Hanning Speke (1827 - 1864), the first European to reach Lake Victoria in East Africa, which he correctly identified as the long-sought source of the Nile, resulting in a very public disagreement with Richard Burton, with whom Speke had explored much of East Africa.

It remains uncertain whether his death was an accident or suicide, being killed by his own gun while hunting.
