Sir John Soane's Museum :: Visitors' Map of London :: A-Z Maps
Sir John Soane's MuseumOne of the smaller yet most remarkable of London's museums, it houses the personal collection of the architect John Soane 1753-1837, as displayed by him. The house is his own unique design, incorporating many of his individual ideas on the use of space, scale, proportion and mirrored surfaces. The contents include: Soanes furniture and library with his valuable collection of architectural drawings; antiquities, casts and sculpture; the sarcophagus of Pharaoh Seti I c.1370BC purchased by Soane following the British Museum's lack of interest; Roman architectural and sculpture fragments; Gothic fragments and casts; fragments from the old Palace of Westminster. The Paintings collection includes works by Turner, Canaletto and Watteau, while the Picture Room with its hinged walls specifically designed by Soane, reveals the finest collection of William Hogarth's work - eight scenes of the renowned 'Rakes Progress' and four of 'The Election'.
