Science MuseumThis renowned collection of historical exhibits, supplemented by working models and reconstructions is displayed to illustrate the history of science and technology, the development of engineering, transport, and important industries.
Artefacts are arranged under themed displays. Making the Modern World tells the story of innovation in science and technology, from the mid-18th century to the present. Energy Hall displays include historic full-size engines and models illustrating the development steam power that helped Britain become the world’s first industrial nation. 'Exploring Space' gallery shows the development of rockets, missiles, satellites, space probes and landers including the Apollo 10 Capsule.
Among the many other iconic exhibits are the early locomotives 'Puffing Billy' and 'Rocket'; cycles like the 'Boneshaker' and 'Penny-farthing', the aircraft used by Alcock and Brown on the first direct trans-Atlantic flight 1919, and the experimental vertical take-off 'Flying-Bedstead' 1954.
The museum includes many interactive exhibits ideal for children like Launch Pad which explores the world of physics, the 'Pattern Pod' gallery, 'Energy - fuelling the future' and 'Who Am I?'. The IMAX cinema features exciting science and natural history films.
Free, but admission charged cinema and special exhibitions.
