Royal Academy of Arts (Burlington House)

This, our leading independent art institution is the venue for important special exhibitions of artistic and historical significance throughout the year, besides being famous for its annual Summer Exhibition, open at all living artists who have the chance to sell their artworks from this prestigious address.

The academy, founded in 1768 under the patronage of George III, first exhibited at Somerset House and did not move here until 1869; Sir Joshua Reynolds - whose statue is in the forecourt - was its first president. Many other famous artists have passed through the Royal Academy Schools including Turner, Constable and Millais. Old Burlington House was the town house of the Earls of Burlington, the 3rd Earl being responsible for the present building constructed 1715. The massive chunk of 19th century wings and Piccadilly frontage house several learned institutes and societies and create a tranquil courtyard at the centre of West End bustle. The Academy doubled its size in 2018 by linking to the newly restored 6 Burlington Place adding galleries, lecture theatre and learning centre.
