Old Leather Market :: Visitors' Map of London :: A-Z Maps
Old Leather MarketAn impressive stone market quadrangle of 1833 built for the Leather Warehouse Company and the ornate Leather Exchange of 1879, are the only remaining fragments of the once important Bermondsey leather industry, historic buildings that were saved from demolition in 1993 and turned into useful workspaces.
Formerly based around Leadenhall Market until the Great Fire of London, the leather industry moved south of the Thames in the 18th century, granted Royal Charter in 1703 by Queen Anne.
