Imperial War Museum (Lambeth Road)

In the words of Burns - 'Man's inhumanity to man, makes countless thousands mourn' - and here are just a few of the instruments. The collection encompasses all aspects of warfare in which British and Commonwealth Forces have been involved since 1914.

Most of the large exhibits date from the two World Wars and include the following : a pair of 15 inch naval guns (entrance courtyard), mark V tank, howitzers, 'Ole Bill' the famous B type bus used to carry troops to the 1914 front line, Sopwith Camel aircraft, Fairey Swordfish torpedo bomber, Spitfire Mk 1, Focke-Wolf 190 (most of museum's aircraft are however at its Duxford site). There are torpedoes, a German one-man submarine, and many models of ships; both the V1 flying bomb and the V2 rocket can be inspected.

Dramatic recreations with sounds, smells and special effects include WWI 'Trench Experience' and WWII 'Blitz experience'. Art galleries show works by war artists including William Coldstream, Jacob Epstein, Anthony Gross, Henry Moore, Paul Nash, John Piper. The museum, founded in 1917, occupies a building designed in 1812 as Bethlem Hospital for the Insane - whence 'Bedlam'. Free, admission charge to special exhibitions.
