Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Sophia

Designed in an imposing Byzantine style by John Scott and opened in 1879, St Sophias is administered by the Brotherhood of the London Greeks, under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, it is the only purpose-built Greek Cathedral in the UK.

The first Greek Orthodox Church in London was built in Soho during the reign of Charles II and consecrated in 1677, after its confiscation by the Authorities in 1684, the Greeks subsequently moved on to various other chapels. On its demolition in 1936, the entrance inscription was salvaged and incorporated into the new Cathedral.
