Gray's InnThe four Great Inns of Court, Inner and Middle Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn, perform the function of University to the legal profession. Each has its own peculiar maze of courts, alleys and gardens preserving the tranquil atmosphere of earlier times.
Among the blocks of chambers of Gray's Inn are several historic buildings, these include the 16th century hall where Shakespeare's 'Comedy of Errors' received its first performance. the Chapel, Gateways and the Library established c.1555, although much has been heavily restored or rebuilt following World War II bombing; The 16th century philosopher Francis Bacon resided here, and is thought responsible for creating Gray's Inn Gardens - his statue can be seen in South Square.
