City of London (District) :: Visitors' Map of London :: A-Z Maps
City of London (District)The City of London is that 'square mile' devoted to international banking, insurance and commerce, packed by day with a multitude of office workers and largely deserted at night and weekends. At its heart are the Bank of England, Royal Exchange and Mansion House. Lombard Street, named after the Lombard goldsmiths and money-lenders established here in the Middle Ages, is now the centre of British banking, a very distinguished address enhanced by numerous bank signs hung medieval fashion over the pavements.
The City's fascinating history from Roman times through to the 20th century is presented chronologically in the Museum of London. The City's corporate municipal government was born c.1192 with the election of the first Lord Mayor, Henry Fitz Alwyn - a post still elected annually by the historic Livery Companies in the medieval Guildhall. It is here that the Court of Common Council, the City's principal administrative body sits under the Lord Mayor; meetings are in public.
The modern City retains much of its historical independence having its own Police Force and Law Courts. Ancient customs are still observed - on State occasions the Lord Mayor and Aldermen precede the Sovereign into the City following formal surrender of the
Pearl Sword at Temple Bar, thus symbolising the over-lordship of the Sovereign.
The City Information centre provides useful details of all aspects of City Life, daily events, lunchtime concerts at City churches, Livery Hall open days, ceremonial events like the Lord Mayors Show (November).
