Central Markets (Smithfield)

London Central Market or Smithfield Market as it is known, enjoys the benefits of modernised meat storage and handling facilities within its fine ornate and atmospheric Victorian iron buildings which date from 1869.

This historic area was just outside the City Wall and once known as 'smoothfield', famous in the Medieval period for tournaments, St Bartholomew's Fair (until 1840), horse and livestock markets (until 1855), also a place of executions including that of William Wallace, beheaded in 1305 for supporting Robert Bruce's claim to the Scottish throne. Roman Catholic and Protestant Martyrs were burnt at the stake here for their beliefs - during the 16th and early 17th centuries. Wat Tyler was murdered here, struck down by the Lord Mayor - ending the 1381 Peasant's Revolt.
