Bloomsbury (District) :: Visitors' Map of London :: A-Z Maps
Bloomsbury (District): An area famous for national institutions, educational establishments and Georgian domestic architecture set around peaceful squares - Bloomsbury, Bedford, Tavistock and Fitzroy. There are many places to visit including the British Museum, British Library, Cartoon Museum and the Foundling Museum. Bloomsbury was once a highly fashionable residential area, especially in the early 1900s with the intellectual and artistic Bloomsbury Group; the area is now visually dominated by the colossal University of London Senate House. Founded by Royal Charter in 1836 as an examination organisation, the University of London was in 1878 the first British University to admit women for degrees on equal terms with men - and it became a teaching university in 1900.
