Albert MemorialLondon's most eccentric monument and the epitome of High Victorian taste. The 180 ft spire of ornate stonework is encrusted with mosaics, gilt and pinnacles, surrounded by allegorical statues and relief portraits of famous artists. Within sits Prince Albert, holding a copy of the 1851 Great Exhibition catalogue. It was built 1863-72 in memory of Queen Victoria's Consort, at a cost of £120,000, to designs by George Gilbert Scott. Construction took 20 years.
