The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards
Since its creation in 1956 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT, the DofE has gone from strength to strength. Guided by the same set of principles and by young people themselves, it’s as relevant today as it was then.
Whatever level DofE, part of the award is to plan and complete a practice and final expedition that will truly stretch your horizons. You’ll improve your communication and leadership skills and take a rucksack full of memories home with you.
Learning to use an Ordnance Survey (OS) map is a central part of your expedition. A-Z produce a range of Adventure Atlases which contain OS 1:25000 mapping in a handy booklet. These maps cover many of Britain’s National Parks, areas commonly used for expeditions as part of the DofE awards scheme. Standard OS maps are also available at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale, and are made with both standard paper and stronger laminate which can be wiped clean of route markings.
