Sadler's Wells Theatre
A 300 year history of promoting entertainments began with establishment of a 'musick house' in the 1680s by Mr Sadler who, having discovered an natural water source here went on to promote a successful health spa - hence Sadler's Wells.
After 200 years of fluctuating fortunes and rebuilds, the site was acquired in 1925 by Lilian Baylis who had made a successful venture with the Old Vic Theatre. After a period of alternating productions between the two venues The Wells came to be adopted as the chosen opera and ballet venue, establishing Sadler's Wells Ballet under Ninette de Valois as the first truly British ballet company. Since the departure of Sadler's Wells Opera to the Coliseum in 1968 (later becoming English National Opera) The Wells has developed into an international dance venue serving as a receiving house - both for UK and foreign companies, and as melting pot of new talents and contemporary dance, its importance being recognised with the granting of funds for a completely new state-of-the-art dance theatre which opened in 1998.
