Haymarket Theatre Royal
With its grand classical portico, the Haymarket Theatre was built in 1821 to designs by John Nash and positioned for visual effect during the remodelling of Regent Street. It replaced an earlier theatre of 1720 located just to the north, this had been instrumental in the battle to break the monopoly of the Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres as the only licensed playhouses.
The theatre with its auditorium of rich decoration, gilding and crystal chandeliers, was completely restored 1994 and is now a listed building.
