Royal Opera House

Home of the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet companies who, in conjunction with famous international artistes, perform here throughout the year. The Opera House, built 1856-8 and also known as Covent Garden Theatre, is the third to occupy the site, and was not devoted to opera until 1847. The first building lasted from 1732 to 1808, the second 1808 to 1856, both being destroyed by fire.

The auditorium is of lush decoration in white, gold and deep crimson, its imposing Bow Street frontage incorporates Flaxman and Rossi sculptured panels in the portico from the previous building. The extensive modern wing includes a second studio stage, restaurants, bars and modern public facilities incorporating a section of the cast iron Covent Garden Market Flower Hall. Exhibitions from the archives of memorabilia connected with historic performances and performers are mounted in the public areas.
