Royal Albert Hall

A huge concert hall capable of holding 5000 people and the venue for the famous Promenade Concerts founded in 1895 by Henry Wood. Built 1867-71 at the inspiration of Prince Albert, its design in the form of a glass-domed amphitheatre, decorated externally by a terracotta frieze illustrating the Arts and Sciences, is of a simplicity in striking contrast to the ornate Albert Memorial opposite. The 'BBC Proms' are held annually July to September; throughout the rest of the year, a wide variety of concerts, sporting events, and conferences take place here.
