An imposingly grand classical portico of 1834 fronts a richly decorated auditorium of 1907, though this is only the last of numerous rebuilds, fire having destroyed the original 1772 theatre and subsequent buildings. In the 1950s the theatre was converted into a ballroom, later becoming an important pop and rock music venue. Beautifully restored after many years of neglect and threats of demolition and reopened in 1996 to host large musicals.
