Royal College of Art
A world centre for the postgraduate study of all aspects of art and design. Staff, students and alumni include many internationally renowned artists, designers and academics. It is an independent institution of university status.
Founded in 1837 as the Government School of Design and housed in Somerset House, fine art being included later, and became the Royal College of Art in 1896. The college moved into its Kensington Gore Darwin Building, named after Robin Darwin, Principal from 1948 to 1967, in 1962; there is a second campus in Battersea to accommodate the Sculpture Department, Painting Department and Moving Image Studio.
