Hyde Park Barracks
Replacing earlier army barracks of 1795 and 1880, the distinctive 1960s redevelopment was designed by Basil Spence to house the two regiments of Household Cavalry the ‘The Life Guards’ and ‘The Royal Horse Guards’. The structures are faced with red brick and visually linked exposed contrasting concrete arches, the most prominent feature is the 33 storey residential tower which, overlooking Hyde Park has always aroused considerable controversy.
Mounted Guards leave the barracks daily timed to arrive at Horse Guards at precisely 11am. (10 am. Sundays) to enact the Changing of the Guard ceremony there.
