Hyde Park became a popular venue for orators during the Victorian era, some meetings organised by the Reform League in 1855 and 1859 even ended in mass riots. In 1872 this specific area at the north-east corner was assigned for public assembly and called 'Orators' Corner'. Over the years millions of people have gathered on Sundays observe discussions or take part.
