Designed by W. Railton and erected 1840-3 at the same time as the laying out of Trafalgar Square, the national memorial to Horatio Nelson and his victory at The Battle of Trafalgar 1805. It is 184 ft high including the statue and proverbially said to be high enough to give Nelson a view of the sea. Nelson himself is 17 ft tall.
The base of the monument has four bronze relief panels depicting Nelson's victories cast from captured from French armaments and at the four corners sit huge bronze Lions designed by Edwin Landseer.
