Like Lloyd's of London - the famous international insurance market, Lloyd's Register traces its origins to the coffee house of Edward Lloyd, which, in the latter part of the 17th century, had become a meeting place for those with a professional interest in ships and the cargoes they carried.
The first Register of Ships was published in 1764 giving both underwriters and merchants for the first time, an idea of the condition of the ships they insured and chartered, and since 1880, an annual Register has been published. The top classification of 'A1' from 'A1 at Lloyd's' became synonymous with top quality.
