The first tabernacle on this site was built in 1861 under the stewardship of the famous Baptist pastor Charles Spurgeon, this huge building with a capacity of 6000 with two tiers of balconies was destroyed by fire in 1898, as was its replacement, being hit by World War II bombs, the surviving imposing portico give some indication of its former importance.
Spurgeons printed sermons fill 62 volumes and are still published, he founded a pastors' college, an orphanage and The Sword and the Trowel magazine. In 1887 he led the church out of the Baptist Union for ideological reasons and it continues as an independent Baptist church today.
