The Cenotaph

'To the Glorious Dead'; this simple white stone monument, decorated with flags of the three armed services and mercantile marine commemorates the dead of both World Wars. Designed by Edwin Lutyens and initially erected in plaster for the Allied Victory March 1919, and then rebuilt in stone and unveiled on Armistice Day 1920, the later inscription being added in 1946. Here on Remembrance Sunday (the second in November) a service is held attended by the Sovereign, political and armed forces leaders and the British Legion; two minutes silence is observed at 11.00 in memory of the fallen.
