The Carpenters’ Company has been based on London Wall since its first Hall was built there in 1429, the Company received its first Royal Charter in 1477 although a Master Carpenter is referred to in the City of London’s records as early as 1271. The medieval trade guild, set up to look after the welfare and interests of carpenters living and working in London is still active in supporting and encouraging woodworking crafts, it awards student grants and runs the Building Crafts College, set up by the Carpenters’ Company in 1893, now a government sponsored centre of vocational excellence.
