Established on the south bank of the Thames since the Romans built the first London Bridge, this is London's oldest food market. Based in and around Borough High Street until 1755 by when congestion precipitated its closure and removal to its present site, and by 1870 it had acquired an iron and roof glass structure. Its important wholesale market has, since 1998, been supplemented by an ever-growing, award winning fine food retail market, with farmers and producers from all over Britain and Europe. Londoner and tourist foodies alike cram into this lively atmospheric market on Saturdays.
