These Geographers’ 4 Sheet Maps of London were published in 1964 ahead of major road infrastructure development to meet the demands of increasing car ownership.

Each facsimile copy offers a fascinating snapshot of the capital at a time when the new Greater London Council boroughs were being established (GLC boundaries are shown in preparation for the April 1965 changeover). Discover districts before expansion; detail ultimately lost to future development; bus and trolleybus routes; postcode boundaries and other interesting information at a scale of 3 inches to 1 mile.

The South-West sheet covers an area from London Airport in the north-west, Victoria Station in the north-east to Brooklands in the south-west and Carshalton Beeches in the south-east. Historic detail of interest includes the six runway hexagram layout of London (Heathrow) Airport and an unbroken 2.75 mile Brooklands motor racing circuit in Weybridge. The Hurst Park Racecourse in West Molesey awaits residential development and the M4 Motorway is yet to be built.
